ETA: How could I forget to link the actual video?

If Mitch Benn wants you to stop making his job so easy, you know something's wrong. But even if it gives him fodder for a thousand more songs, I do not want to live in a country where 'serious' TV journalists can get away with asking the lover of a serial murder:
Do you think if you'd had a better sex life, he wouldn't have done this?
That is a DIRECT QUOTE from Kay Burley, interviewing the Pamela Wright, whose former partner Steve Wright who this weekend was convicted of murdering five women in the space of six weeks in 2006. She actually dared to imply that these brutal murders were her fault.

[info]snapesbabe said it best:
I've lost count of the times I have objected to this infantilisation of men - that they can't be held responsible for their own actions; it'sall the fault of their mother/lover/grandma/female schoolteacher/murder victim/whatever - on feminist grounds, but surely it's wrong from a male point of view as well? Don't men want to be grown ups? Do they actually want to be mothered and smothered into irrelevancy?
It's the sort of thing that leaves me utterly speechless except for ejaculations of: How dare she? HOW FUCKING DARE SHE?. Except this time I decided to be pro-active (yay me) and actually email Sky News complaints. I had even got the Press Complaints Commission lined up, but after posting this, post, an email from one Iain Weaver (who for some reason finds this livejournal worth following despite not being an LJer himself) pointed out that the PCC deal with printed, not broadcasted media, and Ofcom are not likely to get Murdoch to do anything. Well, fuck.

There is now a petition available. Spread the word?

I think the big question is, Did his sex life come up in trial? IE: Was it at any point blamed or referenced? Cause, if it was, then, sadly, the question is revelant.

I'd sign a petition. What a bitch.

I'd sign it. Do I get extra points for signing it in her blood?

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a male friend a few days ago. We were discussing the trial of Mark Dixie, that bright spark whose best defense was "I didn't know she was deeeeaaad when i killed and raped slept with her!"

My friend said "there was no way the jury would let him get away with that", and thankfully they didn't, but he didn't understand my doubt. I wish I had his optimism...

edited for typos.

Society will find some way to blame a woman.

Nice.

No man would ever, ever have posed that question to a woman. And the woman who did, is probably on her way to being sacked if we can get a petition going... :)

I've seen similar arguments from both sexes -- not in serial murder cases, that I can remember, but "if only she'd been better in bed, he wouldn't have [cheated/raped that other woman/molested her kids]." This is pretty sickeningly extreme, but I don't think it's a random, isolated thing. Or entirely the fault of women.

I just cannot fathom how anyone would think, "O hay, this is an EXCELLENT question to ask someone!"

Ever.

Plenty do. It makes life easier, apparently. (note sarcasm, plz :D).

My brother just gave up the chance to live independently and make his own money in order to marry a girl in a country he can't work in and live with her mother, who dictates his diet, career, religion, and lifestyle choices.

There are plenty of people in both genders who want to spend their whole lives being looked after. It's just easier for men to get there, because the majority of women are still socially conditioned to want to Mother.

Iain would be the former [info]daweaver of this parish who I've linked to a lot in the past—a lot of my meta-LJ stuff has come either from him or sources I found through him.

Reading his [info]tsitsoss_rss was one of the things that persuaded me there could be more to this online lark than just chatting to friends, and one of the reasons I started messing around with various blog formats. Naturally, I don't need to comment on the actual story, you've quoted the other half of the brain already.
