Oh dear.

It's a shame really, because I'm very fond of the old Brit horror films of the 60s and 70s, and it seemed that the genre was seeing a bit of a rennaissance over here in recent years with things like 28 Days Later, Dog Soldiers and Shawn of the Dead.

But this kind of laddish tabloid crap will only put the genre in disrepute again, and might lead punters to keep their bums off seats for future Brit horror films. Which would be a pity. Hopefully it'll fail to make any money and something of superior quality will come along and wash it's nasty taste away!

Which were all outstanding movies; the first two as great horror films, the last as a great comedy and a great zombie movie.

If Shaun of the Dead is the Scream of British horror (it isn't) Lesbian Vampire Killers would be the Scary Movie. Unfunny, unscary, missing the point and forgetting that a genre that self-parodies so much doesn't need to be parodied from outside.

Or at least, that's the impression I get. I won't talk much more about the film for fear of being on of those people who complained about Watchmen without seeing it.

Which bodes ill, because Scary Movie was pretty successful and spawned a lot of similar crap. :(

There may be trouble ahead...

Yeah, crap as it sounds, I hesitate to condemn it based on the opinions of others. I'll maybe rent it when it comes out on DVD and see if I hate it as much as most other people seem to!

Well, I'm not going to see it because I don't think I'll like it based on what people have said. That's OK, right?

I hope so, because that's my plan too! :)

I think that the film is mainly for Horne and Corden fans, and I'm not one of those.

It's even more sickening when you realize that "corrective rape" is happening in Africa as we speak.

Indeed.

Giving the film-makers the benefit of the doubt, I suspect they are probably too stupid to deliberately try to push a misogynist message here. I suspect they think this sort of thing is a hoot. But what kind of mysogyny is worse, the conscious kind or the unconscious kind?
25th-Mar-2009 11:12 am (UTC)
I don't think that's a useful question, actually. Unconscious misogyny (or prejudice of your choice) is a sign of abused privilege, of thoughtlessness and ignorance, y'know? I feel I have a responsibility to fight ignorance by saying things like 'this hurts women', but I can't make people listen or care.

Knowing something is misogynist/homophobic etc and doing it anyway OR refusing to apologise after you've done it? That crosses the line into deliberate misogyny/homophobia &c.

Yes, I suppose it's worse to know somehting is wrong and do it anyway.

At least people who are thoughtlessly prejudiced can be educated and can hopefully change their viewpoint. People who deliberately choose to think and act on prejudice are a lot more problematic.

From other reviews, it looks like it's even pushing the limits of 'laddish tabloid crap' - I saw a collection of reviews on the Beeb website. From that, it looks to be too much for the Daily Mail, but juuuust right for The Sun.

The critics rave! LOL

Sounds like a dumb movie. Guess they can't all be "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter."

Wow, you know, hearing how they kill the main vampire makes me go 'They had to have realized how stupid that concept is and are lampooning it, right? Please? Somebody? Bueller?'

Really, this just makes me want to watch... The Descent or even Silent Hill, for a horror film that actually, you know, features women kicking ass (and not in that 'final girl' sort of way)
