Supernatural? Since I'm finally back in a Supernatural mood.

Buckaroo Banzai?

Oops...

1. Dean. Easily.
2. Castiel. Man, I hated Castiel when he first turned up. Now he's just silly and I'm unclenching about him.
3. Sam Sam Sam Sam Sam
4. SAM. INNA FACE. Idiot.
5. Dean Sam and Bobby. <3
6. (Can I say crossover pairings? No?) Dean/Jo. John/Mary. Ellen/Bobby. Gods, I'm so heteronormative.
7. Superficially, Dean. But in an annoying younger sibling way? Sam.
8. Dean's one liners. Double points if they're references to rock music. Also, the soundtrack.
9. The race and gender issues
And I just have taken out the word 'lamest' when I C/Ped.
10. the whole thing, at the moment. Because what the hell, canon?
11. Soemthing involving Mary's family.
12. Far, far too many things based in games and with crossovers from other canons and OCs. Show brings out my Suish tendencies.
29th-Mar-2010 10:07 am (UTC)
Oh, Sam. Yes, I want to slap him and then give him a hug.

I'm sort of the opposite with Castiel, I really liked him as the smitey angel and I'm not crazy about the silliness.

Crossover pairings - YES!

Show brings out my Suish tendencies.

Tell me about it. I think some of it is the opportunity for casual encounters with different people. Anyone can fit into their world. I was struck by a plotbunny about Season 5 Sam meeting Sarah from Provenance again and absolutely terrifying her. The idea is non-shippy but her NAME is disturbing me in a Sue kind of way.

Anyone can fit into their world.
That's true! It might also be the lack of regular female characters (Ruby & Bela weren't my type of female character and Jo isn't regular enough for me), or indeed characters that it wouldn't be weird to ship them with. So I substitute in characters I know more about.

Which... I reas something recently about how "Mary Sue" and slashfic were both just a reactions to not enough female characters written well enough for fen to care about. For my experience, SPN epitmoses this.

(Plus, Sam and blind ex-hero, Dean and superpowered single Mom and John and legacy martial artist are all ADORABUBBLE)

The lack of regular female characters was the other thing I was thinking about.

Yeah, I think that definitely has something to do with it. SPN isn't big on regular female characters that aren't antagonists. But there is the other side of the argument that for fandom in general, poor writing/few appearances is partially an excuse because many of the slash pairings involve male characters which are just as poorly written but fans are willing to make excuses for the male characters and flesh them out. For example, I don't think Castiel has been written any better than Ruby or Jo but he has an enormous fanbase and Dean/Castiel is insanely popular. In fact there was a post today on the subject. I've read some better discussions via metafandom on the subject but I can't put my hands on them now. I think that the two factors combine for most of fandom, however some of us just want more female characters any way we can get them. Says the girl who reads (and once wrote) far too much fic where either one of a popular slash pairing has always been female. I feel that I should really be reading about actual female characters.

At some point I will have to post about Mary Sue and the obstacle she has been against writing any female characters in fanfic. I have strong opinions on the subject :D

*racks memory and tries to identify the pairings* Dean and Mel? John and Black Canary??? Sam and ... I give up.

(Does this make any sense?)

29th-Mar-2010 11:59 am (UTC)
It does make sense!

You don't have to get Sam/Leah, as Leah's an OC I play in a game, is all.
29th-Mar-2010 12:27 pm (UTC)
That's a relief, I'm a little distracted today.

Ooh, very Arrow-esque. I didn't think she sounded familiar.
29th-Mar-2010 12:33 pm (UTC)
she is embarrassingly Arrow-esque. I didn't knwo a thing about Mia Dearden when I created her...
26th-Mar-2010 06:36 pm (UTC)
Discworld?

26th-Mar-2010 06:50 pm (UTC)
1. Death, I think. Although two books later it was Eskarina.
2. Sybil Vimes. She just grew on me.

4. Dr Whiteface. And then RUN LIKE HELL
5. Angua, Tiffany Aching, Nanny Ogg.
6. Sam/Sybil, Angua/Carrot, Lofty/Tonker

8. The fact that it's SO BIG. And satirical.
9. Pterry's conviction that women can either be pretty, or intelligent.
10. The puns.

12. The von Uberwalds growing up.
26th-Mar-2010 08:33 pm (UTC)
How about Susan? She strikes me as beautiful and very intelligent!
26th-Mar-2010 06:36 pm (UTC)
Prisoner?
26th-Mar-2010 06:39 pm (UTC)
never watched it.
26th-Mar-2010 06:43 pm (UTC)
Very strange, and very thought-provoking. I recall raising many beers over discussions about it during medical school, as we all watched its replay on PBS in the 70s.

26th-Mar-2010 06:37 pm (UTC)
Babylon 5?
26th-Mar-2010 06:39 pm (UTC)

09. The vitalist spiritual stuff. And Legend of the Rangers.
10. Crusade
11. Crusade Season 2?
12. None. Don't do fanfic.
27th-Mar-2010 05:54 am (UTC)
Did you ever see the episodes/short stories that got published to complete season one of Crusade?

JMS stated at at least two SF conventions that he isn't ever going back to the Crusade Universe to finish the stories that he'd planned, but I hope he changes his mind.

27th-Mar-2010 08:27 am (UTC)
No, I didn't. I'm not entirely surprised JMS isn't going back to B5, while I'd like him to, for one thing its been too long since the last time they tried to start a spinoff, and B5 never really had the cultural impact Trek does. Pity really.
31st-Mar-2010 05:31 pm (UTC)
01. Alfred Bester
02. Number one.
03. Lyta
04. Zack. (see thirdspace for details)
05. Londo, Ivanova, Garibaldi
06.Neroon/Delenn, Refa/Londo, Lyta/G'Kar
07. Zack, I guess. Which would be why I'm quite so annoyed.
08. Mankind is at least as corrupt as the rest of them.
09. Some seriously wooden acting. Think "You're using them as
weapons?", if that quote means anything to you.
10. None, since I love it all.
11. The Telepath War, or the prelude to that.
12. Don't do fanfic..
26th-Mar-2010 06:37 pm (UTC)

Potter
26th-Mar-2010 07:01 pm (UTC)
1. Remus Lupin.
2. Ginny Weasley. It was like: woah! when did she get awesome?
3. Tonks. Metamorphmagus, baby yeah.
4. Snape. GET THE FUCK OVER HIGH SCHOOL, ALREADY.
5. Remus, Molly Weasley, Tonks.
6. McGonagal/Hooch, Ron/Hermione, Fred/Angelina
7. Hermione. Doesn't everyone say her?
8. the fact that I stayed up late reading every single one of them because I couldn't put them down
9. that bobdamned epilogue.
10. Teh, uh, fandom itself? Or the fact that I planned out and started writing an epic college-years fic called Harry Potter and the Bottle of Spirits.
11. Madame Hooch's role in the war.
12. I kind of wish I'd followed through on Bottle.
26th-Mar-2010 08:03 pm (UTC)
01. The first character I fell in love with: I never had romantic interest in any of them, but I loved Albus Dumbledore first.

02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Neville Longbottom. He was such a Casper Milquetoast and ended up being amazing.

03. The character I would shag anytime: Can't think of any, actually. I RP'd Severus Snape a LOT and there were any number of players who clearly just wanted a sign, any sign, that I'd take a fancy to them. I always thought, "You're kidding, right? He's emotionally crippled, viciously sarcastic, has poor personal hygiene, and takes pleasure in the others' distress." They all seemed to have some idea that they could be The One to redeem him, to see the REAL him. Ladies -- "the real him" is what JKR wrote. Period. He's a piece of fiction. To me his one positive characteristic was that he was clearly brilliant and a gifted wizard and it was similarly clear (to me) from the start he was using that gift on the side of good.

04. The character I'd slap: Ron. Along the lines of "You idiot, HERMIONE. GOT IT??? HERMIONE!"

05. Who are my 3 favorite characters.
Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore, Dobby

06. What are my 3 favorite pairings.
I never much went in for that.

07. Which character you're most like. If it's not too vain, think I'm like Albus Dumbledore. I even fancy men.

08. The coolest thing about the canon:
Even with seven books and loads of plot lines and details, there were very few plot holes (but see below). I loved talking with friends about theories and discussing characters.

09. The lamest crappiest thing about the canon: All of book four was one big plot hole. It's a great book, but at any time throughout the year Crouch could have just HANDED Harry a portkey. There was no need to go through the whole TWT and get him to the trophy.

10. My guiltiest pleasure in this fandom: Tormenting Snape fans in role play, particularly those who want him to play Dominant to their submissive.

11. What story I wish I could read (or art I wish I could see):
More of Snape's home life as a child and of his non-Lily school memories.

12. What story I wish I had written/still want to write (or art, respectively): The same as 11.
26th-Mar-2010 07:44 pm (UTC)

8. Homage-tastic direction.

10. None of it. It's all good.

11/12. Not interested in Spaced fanfic.
27th-Mar-2010 11:04 am (UTC)
9- Amen to that...
