State of the Brat: November 2012

future (positive)

Given that I haven’t even been keeping Twitter or Facebook updated with the minutia of my life, there’s hardly any surprise if you are unaware of the following things:

- We moved apartments! My contact details on Facebook, Dreamwidth and LiveJournal are all appropriately updated. If you want to send me stuff – and why would you want to do that? – and you’re not friended in any of those places, then you’ll have to be creative. Or ask.

- I have escaped from full time education! And am now languishing in beginning of my career mode, searching for   jobs that require someone to have a masters degree in education and a science PhD. It turns out that it may have been a good idea to get state teaching certification, but who knew I’d love New York this much, right?

- I have been working at the AMNH teaching summer schools and after school classes and as an on-gallery faciliator, and it’s been brilliant and I love teaching. I’m so very glad to be where I am right now.

- I have been fighting the ennui of an uncertain life situation by resolving to get my finger out and write! I took part in two fic exchanges in the month of October: Kaleidoscope and Avatar Ladyfest, and after weeks of whining and procrastinating and not starting, I finally turned out two short fics I’m quite proud of.

Buoyed by that success, I gave into temptation and signed up for Yuletide, an annual fic exchange for ‘rare fandoms’, which I have had the good sense never to commit to while in full time education. This year my decision to sign up was based simply on the fact that one of my favorite books from my childhood was on the list, and I have had a particular story I’ve wanted telling since I was 7. Fortunately, every one else who requested that fandom requested the same story, so I’m optimistic.

I got my assignment on Friday, and I’ve written about 1,000 words a day on that project, because I knew the second I read the prompt that I had secretly always wanted to write it anyway.

And now it’s all I can think of. There’s even a playlist. What am I doing?

Your turn. I feel so out of touch with my friends who live in the computer right now.  How is your work going? What’s your homelife like right now? What stories are you enjoying in the magic boxes or on dead trees these days?
