I am not too old to be up all night drinking and talking, get home on the first train, fall into bed at 8.30 and half two hours sleep.
Anyone who says I am will probably get away with it because I'm too tired to thump anyone.
I have been offered a subdomain to host a blog at Taktix.org
As you know, if you read the kind of thing I write that would make a blog, I write about comics and TV and movies and books and real world politics and occasionally real world science. I care about feminism and gay rights and equal rights in general and sexual politics and the proper portrayal of science and minority characters in fiction and in the media. I draw analogies between speciesm and racism, I postulate on the nature of the multiverse, I discuss rape and how it's dealt with. I get annoyed when science fiction employs bad science. I talk, in fact, pretty much at random.
I think the media, particularly that part of it involved in telling stories and entertaining, is a powerful tool in educating the public and influencing societal opinion, be it 'science doesn't work like that', or 'women deserve to be raped'. I think that in a democracy, an educated public is the most essential step towards to a fair society, and the popular opinion of something, whether it is factually accurate or not, is the opinion that's going to sway policy. I therefore think that storytellers and educators have an important power over what the public as a whole know and think they know. And they have a responsibility to use that power responsibly.
And that I, as someone with knowledge (and everyone has knowledge that is uniquely theirs) have a responsibility to pass that knowledge on, particularly when it contradicts commonly accepted knowledge or may influence an important part of society.
With that said, then:
