Sadly, there is nothing better for medical research funding than a rich person being diagnosed with a specific disease.

My thoughts exactly, when I saw this on the news last night. I mean, I can't blame pterry for wanting to do something now he's got it but it does cross my mind that...well, why can't rich people do things like this even when they haven't been diagnosed with something.

Which is probably terribly unfair for all the wealthy people who do donate secretly or whatever, but still.

Because everyone needs something to bring a cause to their attention.

And that's not exactly fair on Pterry, who donates vast amounts of money to charity - he's a trustee of the Orangutan Foundation, which benefits from fan-run activities such as conventions and plays more than Pterry himself, and he's involved in conversation projects in the UK.

And that's just what he talks about.

That came out a bit wrong - I didn't mean Pterry specifically when I said that (though I didn't know about all the charity stuff he does/donates to). I just meant that there are a lot of rich people in the world and if there were more donations just for the sake of it, then maybe research would be a lot further on than it is.

Then again, I obviously don't know how many wealthy people do help out so it's still a total generalisation on my part.
