Keep in mind this list was from American Book Review and, for whatever reason, Day of the Triffids isn't such a big deal over here as it is on your side of the pond.

Well then, it's a badly compiled list, if they actually wanted the 100 greatest first lines and not "the first lines of 100 novels which have significance to American readers."

The first line in question, I'd add, is:

When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.

Interesting first line - now I want to read the book even more.

And just there's no misunderstanding here: I wasn't trying to defendd the list, just to explain it. Truth be told, I didn't even read the whole list, as I noticed fairly quickly that these were Not My Kind Of Books Anyway. :-)
