I'm this close to walking around blindfold for a day

runaways, karolina
This afternoon I spent some time learning to use Access software in the library: the ATLAS video magnifier, JAWS and Kurzweil. It was interesting and informative, I'm glad I know they're there, and I kind of want to find an excuse to work with them and a visually impaired person.

Of course the reason I gave the librarian for wanting to know all about these things was my supervisor might be able to make use of them, because it's a little embarrassing to say I just think that I should know everything about accessibility in order to be a better person, and frankly there was no way I could say I'm writing a story about a woman who loses the use of both her eyes.

But uh, guess which motivated me more?

"I just think that I should know everything about accessibility in order to be a better person"

Do you mind if I ask why it embarrasses you to say it like this? I've been sorta-learning American Sign Language in my spare time and this is basically what I say whenever someone asks me why, so.

(I guess it's a bit preachy if you phrase it exactly like that, though.)

Because it's a bit preachy? Or I think that I'm in a culture where that kind of thing is frowned on? Don't forget that most "RL" people shut down and put on their patronising hats whenever I mention equality.

Oh. Wow. That... would change things, yeah. I suppose I'm pretty fortunate with my bubble of experience – and I'm talking RL here – which has generally promoted the attitude, "here's you, here's people who are not you. Now get the heck out there and figure out what you can learn from each other."

So: "Why are you learning ASL?"
"Because I like to put myself in someone else's shoes every now and then (also I am a natural hand-talker)."
"Oh, makes sense."

(Contrast with "Why the hell are you learning Latin?"
"I don't know.")

Ohh, sort of envious here, because I still have to learn more about JAWS (probably a couple of those others too). Big accessibility push coming up for all web content at my uni. Not strictly speaking my problem, but I figure I'll be helping out with some of the webpages in my department.

I'm actually kind of amazed. The software still has a long way to go, of course, but it seems much better now than I would have expected.
