  • Catalyst linked to this scene by scene comparison of the Watchman trailer to the comic. In conclusion? A faithful adaptation. which may or may not mean a good movie.

Of course, if you read the Entertainment Weekly article, you find out it's not quiiiiite so faithful.
21st-Jul-2008 12:39 pm (UTC)
Do you have link for the EW article?
21st-Jul-2008 12:44 pm (UTC)
Ta-da!

It all looks fine. Up until a little bomb of 'oh crap that worries me'.

"The catastrophic climax is different. Provocative bits, like a timely subplot about alternative fuels, have been added."

Uh-oh!

Damn, it was sounding so good up until then.

I have decided what my rational and mature response is to this:

LALALALALALALALALALA *not listening* LALALALALALALALALALA
21st-Jul-2008 01:00 pm (UTC)
Ding ding, that's the point.

The subplot doesn't worry me. I like to think of it as playing with the whole 'electric car' thing from the original a bit.

The climax being different? There are so many ways to interpret that. My current hope is along the lines of revising the confrontation with Adrian, not the actual events that he put into place.
21st-Jul-2008 01:10 pm (UTC)
Oh no, I hadn't even thought of them altering the "actual events that he put into place". I just assumed the confrontation would be different!

Crap, if that amjor event in Manhattan is changed .....

OK, now I am worried!
21st-Jul-2008 01:12 pm (UTC)
Heh. There are some reports on watchmencomicmovie.com , that claim to be from extras, stating that they did some green screen reaction shots to something catastrophic. So... pretty safe there, I'm thinking.
21st-Jul-2008 01:15 pm (UTC)
If true, that would relieve some of my worry, I guess.

So what have they done to the confrontation scnes then?
21st-Jul-2008 01:19 pm (UTC)
I'm still thinking it's the way they confront Adrian.

Because really, it's a 'Rorschach and Dreiberg stand there, while Dr. Manhattan gets vaporized, then Laurie fails to shoot him, then Dr. Manhattan's foot comes smashing in, then they all stop because of the news reports. Then the all go home for tea and biscuits'.

...okay, maybe not that last bit. But I'm guessing they'll... drama it up a little. Since I'm still wondering where Dreiberg's Anakin yell in the trailer comes from.
21st-Jul-2008 01:31 pm (UTC)
Funny, I was trying recall the "tea and biscuits" part!

The confrontation is pretty dramatic thematically though - maybe they'll just alter the settting?
21st-Jul-2008 01:57 pm (UTC)
It's very... "one after another", and Rorschach and Dreiberg just sort of stand there, you know?
21st-Jul-2008 12:58 pm (UTC)
Oh whoops, forgot to add - thanks for the link to the article.
21st-Jul-2008 01:01 pm (UTC)
Just do what I'm going to attempt to do - go see it as a movie and disassociate it from the source material. Some great movies come from poor adaptations, and faithful adaptations can produce awful movies.
21st-Jul-2008 01:07 pm (UTC)
Up until now, I had hope that it was going to be good enough to look at as an adaptation but maybe not now .....

I went into Sin City, 300 and V for Vendetta with the "divorced from origin" mindset and was pleasantly surprised on all three counts.
21st-Jul-2008 01:22 pm (UTC)
300 and Sin City (To my shame I have not read V for Vendetta) were both very good adaptations that made for quite good movies - the people who don't like either do so for reasons that were consistent with Frank Miller's work.

I'm hoping Zack Snyder is as faithful to Watchmen as he was to 300, though the worst part of 300 was the pasted on Iraq war analogy, and now I'm scared he might do something similiar...
21st-Jul-2008 01:29 pm (UTC)
That's my worry about the alternative fuels subplot - it will end up as some environmental diatribe.
21st-Jul-2008 01:30 pm (UTC)
*points at EW article*

*points at mentions of added alternate fuel source plotline*
21st-Jul-2008 01:09 pm (UTC)
Heh, yeah. I'm trying to train myself to be able to do that.

Originally, when I learned of the Watchmen movie? I vowed not to read the comic, because I knew it'd spoil the movie experience for me. Like all my friends who bitched about the Lord of the Rings movies.

And then I bought it, read it, and became absolutely obsessed with it. Oops.
21st-Jul-2008 01:13 pm (UTC)
I'd read the graphic novel a few years ago, not even knowing what I was reading - just recommended by my local CBG when I asked what I should read if I wanted to get into comics. I just refused to acknowledge the movie at all, assuming it was going to be crap but then so much of what I saw and read was so good, I began to hope.

And now? Frak! Just FRAK!
21st-Jul-2008 01:01 pm (UTC)
And here's something else I just discovered. Slightly NWS for hints of painting nipple, but a hi-res copy of a Sally Jupiter pin-up done for the movie.
21st-Jul-2008 01:26 pm (UTC)
...errr, totally sorry for my being spamtastic here. I get a liiiiittle passionate about the subject.
21st-Jul-2008 01:27 pm (UTC)
I love you.
21st-Jul-2008 01:34 pm (UTC)
Not spamtastic for me - at least I've found some people who will actually discuss it. The lack of major buzz and debate about this worries me a bit, I've got to say.
21st-Jul-2008 02:00 pm (UTC)
Hee. I just worry when I get into big discussions in someone else's journal that are not with that person.

And yeah, it's interesting. I think The Dark Knight is eating up the comic fanboy consciousness right now.

Or the Black Canary barbie. One of the two.
21st-Jul-2008 02:05 pm (UTC)
mmmmmmm Black Canary Barbie.

I mean.. carry on.
21st-Jul-2008 02:15 pm (UTC)
Black Canary Barbie, corrupting our youth to S&M lifestyles since 2008.
21st-Jul-2008 02:22 pm (UTC)
Yeeeeah.

My Sindys were all being kept by my generic-Ken-like doll as sex slaves at varying consent levels. They didn't need leather and fishnets for that.

I didn't even know what sex was at the time.
