shiny, thing

  • Knitting is one of those things that I once decided I Just Can't Do. Since I have improved (I think it's an improvement) my attitude to one that suggests things just need to be learned, I have so far failed to learn. Mostly because I haven't got the capital for needles and woll and stuff.

Oddly I had to make something very much like that when I refused to cut up a mouse in biology. I made it out of felt and you had to unzip its chest and all its intestines came out.

what is this I hear? The SB ADMIRING a knitted object? Be still my heart! I thought I would never see the day.

Also, knitters rule. Particularly geeky knitters, and let me tell you baby, there are a lot of us!

Genny's already volunteered to teach me! I just haven't got the equipment. Which sounds like a flimsy excuse, but to me to start anything requires a capital investment that I can't afford right now.

Stick an ad on freecycle. I'm sure someone in London has a couple of pairs of serviceable needles they don't need. I'm thinking about teaching myself to knit again, I may be able to borrow needles from the maternal unit.

Although you don't want it turning into another displacement activity. It might work, knit one, purl one, write one line of thesis ;)

I'm not too worried about it becoming a displacement activity from my thesis, anymore than dress making is, because I trust myself to restrain it to off work hours.

It might, however, be a displacement activity from drinking, help me focus when I'm watching TV, and have other combine-with-being-social uses.

I have visions of people sitting around playing "I have never" with half done socks rather than beer...

That lab rat thing is awesome :)

I'm so glad I learned to knit, and delight in making scarves and shawls and hats for fun and profit! I'm still a little shy of the more complex stuff, I hate the idea of knitting a gauge swatch, and I worry that I don't have the patience for the tougher stuff.

It's great, though - keeps me from snacking while I'm watching TV!
