An American Election Thing

pissed off
You don't have to watch this vid, but I recommend you do.

[YouTube Link]

This is not a partisan issue. This is not a 'who do you want to win' issue. This is a straight up, potentially threatening, bigotry issue, and whomever you choose to vote for (if you can), please think about signing Color of Change's open letter to McCain, asking him to tell his supporters to stop spreading this hate.

To say I didn't cry after watching that would be a lie. I don't think I have ever been so scared for the future of America and for the safety of Obama as I am after seeing that video.

My own mother admitted to me that she won't vote for Obama because of his race. And when I pointed out that was an awfully racist attitude, she responded, in all sincerity, "It's not racist. It's not because he's black, it's because one of his parents was Egyptian, and that makes him Middle-Eastern, and I don't want a Muslim running the country."

I didn't even bother to respond to all the things that were wrong with that sentence.

I mean, my parents are staunch Repugnicans, so I knew they wouldn't vote for him anyway, but the level of ignorance and hatred in that statement just took my breath away.

I'm fortunate in my relationship with my family that I can point out when they say something that I find racist, and we can have a conversation. Not being able to talk to your own family like that amazes me.

Kenya is the same thing as Egypt totally.

Whenever anyone in either of the big two parties (OK so its usually the Tories) says anything vaguely off-colour about ethnicity, religion, etc in this country their respective leaders are very quick to squelch them. That this isn't happening in this campaign is very worrying. Has nobody, however minor, on the GOP side said "uh guys? STFU!"?

Didn't the Republicans bring in term limitations because they had to wait for Roosevelt to die before they could get back in the White House? I think its a shame that some of the best satirical shows aren't running at the moment. Because she's being torn to shreds over here. By the polite ones.

You do realize you're asking an American about American history, right?

Yes. I thought you might know the answer. If you don't you just have to say... ;)

The British history I know is all socio-economic (Industrial Revolution, transportation, labour movements, women's rights.) I could reel off dates and inventors, but ask me who was king and the only thing I could say would be "probably called George".

Frankly I lose interest in America after the charismatic megafauna gets wiped out.

That's pretty much hideous.

God... that's disgusting. I feel so bad for the intelligent Americans when shit like this comes to the surface. I always knew Obama's name (and colour) were going to be an issue to some ignorant assholes, but seriously, some parts of that video have left me speechless...

Intelligent American people, we Canadians welcome you with open arms.

Times like this make me realize I should study up on Canadian or English tax laws and up and leave. I know this is nothing new, but it disgusts me more and more how easily it is brought up to the surface.
