The International Herald Tribune

Yeah, 2008 has generally been a hard one, hasn't it? And guess what? It doesn't just feel like a long year, It really is  longer than normal.

That is sad news :-( I hope she passed away peacefully.

So sad.

Meanwhile, that leap second thing freaks me the eff out.

I think we get them fairly semi-regularly. The Earth's rotation is variable.
12th-Dec-2008 11:34 am (UTC)
Oh, I know. And I think I'd heard about the concept before. Really, it's not inserting the seconds that bothers me so much as AUGH THE EARTH'S ROTATION IS SLOWING DOWN.

(er, and yes, I realize it's not doing so quickly enough to matter to us, really. it just freaks me out.)

So is the speed of light, your somatic reflex arc reaction speed, the postal service and the speed at which you get out of bed in the mornings.

Yeah. I know.

The world is crashing down on us. WOE.

I never really knew much about her. So many iconic figures seem to have had tragic episodes in their lives - thankfully hers was largely out of the public eye.

The extra second just means you can fit in an extra kiss at New Year! ;o)

... too early for my brain to process something like leap seconds.

... Oooh, it's time to eat something. Until I saw your mood theme, I thought for a minute that vintage_sex had finally put something up about Ms Page's passing.

*reads article* Bearing in mind my blood sugar is probably stupidly low right now, does that mean that the days are getting longer as the Earth's rotation slows? Because that's what it seems like it means...

Right, no, yeah, food time now pls.
12th-Dec-2008 12:54 pm (UTC)
Yep. The length of the day is how long it takes for an entire rotation to happen. As the speed gets slower, it takes longer.

I choose to look at this positively.

Someday, there WILL be enough hours in a day to get everything done!
12th-Dec-2008 01:24 pm (UTC)
400 million years ago there were 400 days in a year. Round about the time the moon formed the day was only 10 hours long.

400 is such a nice round number, too.

Granted, ten-hour days migh make me decide to sleep one day out of every three, and people tell me that's not good for me.
