Technology Hates Me

drama
I already had a list of things I really need to buy myself when my budget stretches to more than 'food and bills'. It had previously consisted of 'shoes that don't have holes in', but has now stretched to a wireless router, because our wireless network is completely shot apparently, and a DVD player. the router's not a big deal, I guess, because we have ethernet, but the fact that my 4-year old multiregional £20 DVD player has finally decided to crap out, with my Blackadder II DVD therein, which incidentally is worth more than the player itself. Of course, Amazon now have no multiregionals for less than £35, and I'd really rather eat right now.

Add to that the fact that I can't seem to back up my LJ - the LJ export page gives an empty page. LJArchive tells me:
The server requires that you set your encoding setting before your journal can be downloaded. This setting can be found at your journal's web site, at the bottom of the 'Edit Personal Information' page in the 'Auto-convert older entries from:' box
- and I can't even find the 'Edit Personal Information' page. It's certainly not on the edit profile page. Lj-Sec tells me:
SYNCHRONISATION FAILED!
Error Message: Client error: Invalid text encoding: Cannot display this post. Please see http://www.livejournal.com/support/encodings.bml for more information

Oh yeah, and both my computers are so memory starved right now they can hardly do anything.

Technology hates me.

OK, enough ranting. I'm going to do the bills then knit.

Have I mentioned how much I hate the site layout of LJ? It's all a huge mess.

Uh, I mean, thank you.

Yup. And the people that are in the middle of trying to fix it have all just been fired.

All the discussions I had with Greg Kennedy and Stacey in Design and elsewhere made me really hopeful about the future, the three of them were doing so much to fix all these issues. Now they're gone. Sure, their Russian replacements might be just as good, but it'll take them months just to get up to speed with the issues, let alone move forwards towards fixing all the issues, and there's no time for a proper handover.

Um, part of the encoding thing is likely because delicious uses western european, while LJ (correctly) switched to Unicode ages back. Which means some of your entries are on the wrong encoding :-(

As are mine. Been too busy to actually do much though (by "too busy" I actually mean "slept most of the day after taking Shrub to school as I'm knackered" but have been amusing her downstairs and tidying the living room back to where the stuff should be sans tree).

DVD players are made to die, I think. We have had three in seven years. And while I have watched the price drop each time, and the things it would play increase, it is annoying that they don't last. Whereas I have had two VCRs in twenty years, and that has a lot more moving parts (if a lot less hi tech components)

With any luck, my current DVD will live until Blue-Ray players are affordable. And if not, my laptop can play them.

I have a cheap DVD player you can have for free, if you like. It's only a few months old and isn't multi-region, but it'd do for UK DVD's until you get a new one. I mean, it's more basic than basic but eh. Yours if you want it.

Oooooh.

I mean, we have a lot of Region 1s, but mostly region 2, and anything's better than watching Dave over and over again. How can you get it to me?

I'll send it! Email me your address (writetolive at gmail dot com) and I'll whack it in the post as soon as I find a box for it. So probably tomorrow. Do you need the SCART lead for it?

I have a wireless router going spare at the moment, if you'd like it.

I might vey well do that. What're the specs? Does it also have ethernet?

It's a Phillips thingamajig, never actually used it as wireless as I had all that loveley network cable taped to the wall in my old place. I think it's b/g, I'm sure it's not n.

If you're in the pub Friday, I'll bring it along (I have no knowlege of plans for Friday but I assume a pub trip will be likely). Otherwise, we're going to try and finish Descent at sad club next week so I'll bring it with me then.

I should be out tomorrow, yes. Maybe a little late due to reasons I'll explain.
