Newsarama is carrying the news that the Suicide Squad are in talks right now
for a potential movie. A thought that, on it's own, makes me very happy indeed, and I've only read about three issues!Suicide Squad
, for those even less informed than me, was a DC group that existed before, but really came into its one in the series that started in 1987. A covert Government organisation, headed by Amanda Waller, an overweight African American equipped with an attitude of awesome, it employed several people of dubious morality, recruited from DC's long roster of villains. This included the terribly written Australian stereotype Captain Boomerang from Flash's Rogues Gallery, and my current favourite anti-villain, Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot
, currently appearing in the outstanding Secret Six
, penned by Gail Simone and drawn Nicola Scott.
Deadshot already technically exists in the DC movieverse, having appeared in Gotham Knight
, the animated series of shorts between Batman Begins
and The Dark Knight
, but I'm choosing to believe they'll ignore that.
Oh, and Suicide Squad was also the first appearance of Oracle, did I mention that?
This movie has the potential to be awesome
, simply by the very nature of the subject matter. Action-heavy, lots of explosions and guns, some really cool fighting work, and the raw material for some great characters, as the book was character heavy.
Justin Marks, who has been taken on to write the screenplay, also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Supermax, the Green Arrow movie that appears to have nothing to actually do with Green Arrow, except for being based very loosely on a bronze age story in which Ollie is incarcerated in the same prison as the villains he used to help put away. That a movie I'm excited about could be linked to a movie I'm expecting to be annoyed by speaks for neither of them: the concept of Supermax confuses me, but a straight up Suicide Squad, well...
...I'm going to be disappointed, because I already expect so much.
