A quick PSA.
14th-Nov-2009 09:34 pm
earth, hhgttg
I have another PSA coming up when the Holiday season actually starts, but i think I need to say this as I've seen a lot of "Can I have your address?" posts going up.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME A HOLIDAY CARD.

Holiday emails are fine. Holiday gifts both in physical and electronic forms are unnecessary but will be received with gratitude and love. But please do not write my name on a piece of paper and put it an folded piece of paper and have it put on a fuel-burning vehicle. The carbon footprint generated by snail mail  in the UK - not even mentioning airmail - is bad enough, but Enfield Council do not provide local paper recycling for our neighbourhood, and I can't access collection centres very easily.

Please consider spending what small money a card would have cost, on something more meaningful for yourself, someone else, or the planet.

Thank you.

(P.S. That's not to say I don't still appreciate letters, but they contain more.)

I may have to say something like this. I love getting holiday cards, but I really hate it when it's just a card with "To Van, From X" and nothing else, as it seems such a waste of paper, of stamps, of effort, time, money, fuel, etc.

But I think I also have all the Christmas cards I've been sent since I was about 13, so they don't go right into the garbage either.

I keep them, as well. But I'm kinda a packrat like that, and they're not in any good order or well stored, so I probably should organize them, or take on a stance like you.

Do I get to send a birth announcement, knock on wood, come the new year?

You'd better.

What.... about... the pies? I have an idea the carbon footprint of a patty tin would thwomp a dozen cards. :( But. Um. You can re-use a patty tin.

If I can eat it, then it doesn't count. Also, I keep and re-use tins all the time.

HA I actually have a brilliant plan involving MAILING THEM TO BINGVILLE INSTEAD.

Will do. And for the record, I am absolutely taking this in the spirit that I believe you intend it.

It's -- sending cards is one of those things that I love to do, but I do recognize the less-than-green impact it represents, especially in this day and age. I am considering trying a carbon offset to balance it, or something, because I truly do love to send cards.

Yes, I'm conflicted. But that's my issue, not yours. In any case, happy holidays, dear one. :)

Good luck with the conflict. I understand, because I love it myself (when it doesn't stress me out - my anxiety is a delicate balance) but I made this decision this year.

Ooooh, gift tags out of old cards - that's a great idea for reuse! I'd been adding them to the recycle pile with junk mail and suchlike, but I think I'll be adopting this idea.
