THIRTY DAYS OF MEME: 22 A Website

There are no female politicians.
There are no female scientists.
There are no women creating comics.
There are no women writing, directing or producing movies or TV shows
There are no women creating science fiction/fantasy/horror genre stories of your choice.

There sure as hell aren't any women interested in or blogging about those subjects.

What? What do you mean that's not true? If it's not true, why are people always telling us it is so?

It pissed Jennie off so much that she decided there needed to be a central place online to put a directory of women in these areas, to eliminate the cry of "I just don't know any women making horror/blogging about science/drawing superheroes". Well, not eliminate it, but at least quiet it a little.

The website is theyreallydoexist.wordpress.com and it's very much in the fledgling stages. It needs your submissions.

I can certainly add some politics/political analysis links, once I do a bit of digging. The first person to come to mind was Sarah Childs at Bristol, who does a lot of good work on UK politics and gender. Thanks for the link!

If I like a TV show, movie, or comic, or admire a scientist (politicians are all equally corrupt), it's certainly got nothing to do with the gender of the person(s) involved. I couldn't care less what gender someone has under their clothes, and I don't deliberately seek out stuff created by women under the misguided illusion that it's "better" in some way than anything done by men. It's insulting to suggest that all women should like stuff just because it's created by a woman, rather than on its own merits.

Who has suggested otherwise?

IT's not "this is done by women, you must like this" but a much more important "stop saying there are no prominent female X when writing a feature on X".

It happens when people talk about blogging, constantly, and SFX magazine just did a horror special in whihc 34 different people were asked to nominate a favourite piece--none of the 34 contributors were female, the editor subsequently said "perhaps there are no prominent female horror writers".

I don't like horror, and I can name several off the top of my head.

It doesn't matter who writes stuff, except when a large number of people contributing get excluded simply because people don't think they count, or forget they're there (for example, feminist blogs, even if they talk almost exclusively about legislation, don't get counted as political blogs, because feminism isn't politics).
