Lib Dem

Cliff Chiang Variant Cover of Birds of Prey #1 - via DC Women Kicking Ass dcwomenkickass

This is neat: Keeping important links on my facebook page not only gives me a handy list to check back on when compiling, but also lets me talk to people I know on there who wouldn't comment on notes or LJ. Best of both worlds.

Once again, this week's been rather dominated by the General Election, which hasn't lost any of the excitement of the opening week, but is now beginning to grate. It's like - we've had the awesome opener where there's lots of action and the main characters and antagonists are introduced, and now we have to sit through loads of boring sub plots and 'character moments' before the climax and we find out who wins.

Yes, I did watch Iron Man 2 last night.

Here are some things I think are relevent though:

DVDs Worth Watching - Hollywood Still Behind the Times in Treatment of Women
When changing a character from female to male results in entire plot points being tweaked to avoid immasculating that character, you know something is fundamentally wrong with the way you're writing women.

Switch into Glide - Where were all of the feminists? Oh, right, busy planning a “Boobquake”
Earlier this week was a thing called Boobquake - an internet movement in which women decided to wear revealing clothing in protest over Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi's well publicised comments about earthquakes and immodest dress. Aside from my own feelings of discomfort at being told that I was a bad feminist by not getting my tits out, there was something else that struck me as not quite right, though it took most of the day for me to properly put my finger on it.
The events are a vector for the co-option of feminist rhetoric to further objectify women, and a demonstration of the smug North American sense of moral and developmental superiority over those “other” brown folks in the Middle East. The people who should REALLY be leading the response to the statements made by the cleric are IRANIAN and MUSLIM WOMEN, who have, you know, the LIVED EXPERIENCE of dealing with these statements every day, but their voices are silenced by us obnoxious and entitled white-educated-secular types who feel the need to make a BOOBQUAKE instead of really listening and standing in solidarity.

General Election

Cubik's Rube - Your Democracy's Spoiling My Vote!
On how the rhetoric of a scary scary hung parliament and the 'wasted vote' meme is harmful to democracy and why we need Electoral Reform.
If every Lib Dem vote were counted for the Conservatives, it’d be a landslide. But the same goes the other way. And it really pisses me off (enough to use lots of italics for emphasis) when other people assume that I’m the one who shouldn’t get to have my say for who I want, as if everyone else’s votes were already fixed and immutable and I’m ruining everything by making my own damn decisions.
Don't Judge My Family

The Conservative Manifesto includes plans for a Marriage Tax Allowance in order to reward people for having a traditional family structure, as approved by Tory ideals. This campaign thinks the proposal is judgmental, neglect people in greater need, and is a tremendous waste of money. Spot the Ethical Palaeontologist on the "family" page!

Sorry, I know me rambling about politics isn't why you bought the ticket to this blog.

Hark, A Vagrant - AQUAMAN Defender of the Seas
Aquaman is awesome and you know it.

Clubhouse - Windows 7: Boosting Performance with ReadyBoost
Apparently Windows 7 lets you use flash or SD memory to boost what you have. Worth a try?

STFU Parents
Dear friends of mine: I love you all. Every single one of you. Because none of my friends feel the need to post pictures of their child taking a poop

And is there Honey still for Tea?
Yes, you do want to read apocalyptic Winnie the Pooh fic. Trust me.

Nick Clegg poster should read "This is my cum face" like all election and political posters should.
30th-Apr-2010 12:04 pm (UTC)
He looks like Donny Osmond. I wish I could unsee that.

Hang on I thought you said you hadn't seen IM2 yet. *check twitter* *realises he didn't read properly* *facepalm*

I thought I was the only one feeling uncomfortable about Boobquake. But I knew if I mentioned it, the friends who were 'attending' might get all up in my face and I've recently realised I don't deal well with being yelled at.

That being said, I do agree with the points you made on it.

No, you weren't. I felt mighty pissed off about it. I got sick of seeing blokes say "I fully support women in science today!" in reference to the Boobquake.

It reminded me of the breast cancer adverts aimed at men ("Save the Boobs" I think it was called). Not "save women's lives" or "save women", save their BOOBS. Because those are the only part of a woman that matter. That and the area between our legs.
30th-Apr-2010 01:00 pm (UTC)
...Urgh. I never actually saw those adverts. That's repulsive.
30th-Apr-2010 01:06 pm (UTC)
I was also uncomfortable with it. I spend most of my life covering up, because that's just how I like to dress, and I'm not going to change it for this.

I did like the "scientific experiment" side of it, rather than it just being lots of Western women getting their tits and legs out to piss off a cleric - but overall I wasn't happy with it. I spend my life trying to avoid casual objectification and the feeling that I am being constantly judged for the sexual attractiveness of my appearance - I'm not going to court it in the name of 'feminism'.
30th-Apr-2010 01:43 pm (UTC)
I'm constantly being told I'm not a feminist because I don't want to sleep with everyone in sight and sing along to pop songs about having tons of sex.

Boobquake kind of felt similar to me...:/

When is BoP out in the UK?
30th-Apr-2010 02:26 pm (UTC)
Two weeks time. The day after it's out in the USA.

Maybe it's just me, but I have issues with the birds of prey cover. Oh yes, the girls are back, but look! A boy, front and center, so guys can read it too!

Might be just me.
30th-Apr-2010 03:17 pm (UTC)
I don't disagree that you have a point, but I see it as Hawk and Dove taking centre stage - in a classicly problemmatic "boy is strong and agressive, girl is graceful and elegant" way that I'm so used to I hardly see. The four established women are smaller background details because we expect them in it.

So, yeah. I saw it more as "look, Hawk and Dove are new" rather than "Look, Hawk is a booooy!" Now you've pointed it out, I see it.

Which is kinda funny, since it's only thanks to your blog that I see these things. Full circle, type o thang.
