This is neat: Keeping important links on my facebook page not only gives me a handy list to check back on when compiling, but also lets me talk to people I know on there who wouldn't comment on notes or LJ. Best of both worlds.
Once again, this week's been rather dominated by the General Election
, which hasn't lost any of the excitement of the opening week, but is now beginning to grate. It's like - we've had the awesome opener where there's lots of action and the main characters and antagonists are introduced, and now we have to sit through loads of boring sub plots and 'character moments' before the climax and we find out who wins.
Yes, I did watch Iron Man 2
Here are some things I think are relevent though:
FeminismDVDs Worth Watching - Hollywood Still Behind the Times in Treatment of Women
When changing a character from female to male results in entire plot points
being tweaked to avoid immasculating that character, you know something is fundamentally wrong with the way you're writing women.
Switch into Glide - Where were all of the feminists? Oh, right, busy planning a “Boobquake”
Earlier this week was a thing called Boobquake
- an internet movement in which women decided to wear revealing clothing in protest over Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi's well publicised comments about earthquakes and immodest dress. Aside from my own feelings of discomfort at being told that I was a bad feminist by not getting my tits out, there was something else that struck me as not quite right, though it took most of the day for me to properly put my finger on it.
The events are a vector for the co-option of feminist rhetoric to further objectify women, and a demonstration of the smug North American sense of moral and developmental superiority over those “other” brown folks in the Middle East. The people who should REALLY be leading the response to the statements made by the cleric are IRANIAN and MUSLIM WOMEN, who have, you know, the LIVED EXPERIENCE of dealing with these statements every day, but their voices are silenced by us obnoxious and entitled white-educated-secular types who feel the need to make a BOOBQUAKE instead of really listening and standing in solidarity.
General ElectionCubik's Rube - Your Democracy's Spoiling My Vote!
On how the rhetoric of a scary scary hung parliament and the 'wasted vote' meme is harmful to democracy and why we need Electoral Reform.
If every Lib Dem vote were counted for the Conservatives, it’d be a landslide. But the same goes the other way. And it really pisses me off (enough to use lots of italics for emphasis) when other people assume that I’m the one who shouldn’t get to have my say for who I want, as if everyone else’s votes were already fixed and immutable and I’m ruining everything by making my own damn decisions.Don't Judge My Family
The Conservative Manifesto includes plans for a Marriage Tax Allowance in order to reward people for having a traditional family structure, as approved by Tory ideals. This campaign thinks the proposal is judgmental, neglect people in greater need, and is a tremendous waste of money. Spot the Ethical Palaeontologist
on the "family" page!
Sorry, I know me rambling about politics isn't why you bought the ticket to this blog.
